It warmed up overnight so I celebrated
by taking a 1 mile deck walk before breakfast. During the walk I
spied one whale spout and one leaping tuna. Throughout the morning
whale spotting reports kept coming in. Some turn out to be the bottle
nose dolphin. We have our Andean Landing Cards just issued so
tomorrow we may begin to experience Peru. We attended briefings on a
couple of coming ports of call then found a Greek lunch. This
afternoon I have to report for whale watch duty. The sky at noon was
overcast and the sea smooth. By one it had cleared. A large pod of
dolphins appeared portside aft and played alongside for a few
minutes. From our vantage point we could see them gliding along under
the water then they would burst up into the air, plunging again into
the clear sea.
Sea birds are numerous and by late
afternoon the fishing fleet was in view. We are traveling in about
900 meters of water and close to the trench which drops to 9000
meters.
Late afternoon we sailed through many
mysterious white blankets of something. This must be discharge of
something man-made and it may be chemical, though it does not have
the sheen is petroleum or the foam of detergents.
