Day 16, At Sea off the Coast of Chile

Following a quiet night the morning was cloudy with 68 degrees temperature and low seas; no white caps. We passed the Tropic of Capricorn this morning, without ceremony. We had a little mild and slow pitching from swells from the SW. Seas remained flat and by late morning the sun was shining through greats breaks in the clouds and soon it was flat blue seas. I peeled an hour away from my portside watch to attend the culinary arts center guest chef presentation on the preparation of Ceviche Traditional de Conchas (scallop ceviche), Pisco Sour and Ceviche Tiradito Nikkei (raw fish on a sauce). After lunch I went back on watch and spotted a pod of dolphins not far off the port side. Later in the afternoon a large area of splashing indicated a feeding frenzy was going on out there. Being out of sight of land now we have a sharp horizon and a few white caps to watch. We are sailing over the Atacama Trench which ought to harbor some surprises.
The Noon report places 24° 48.34'S and 071° 16.11'W, steering 186° and turning 19.4 knots. Sea depth is 6,700 meters. Wind SE at 8k. 388 nm made good noon to noon, about. Total voyage has now covered 4,066nm.
