Day 2; January 8, Cayman Islands
Our third visit to Grand Cayman and we
decided to go ashore to see if we had missed anything before.
Shopping is a big draw but we passed on
that, not needing anything but entertainment. By 11 we were anchored
and 1230 headed ashore in a tender. Two large cruise ships were
already disgorging passengers so when we set foot ashore the terminal
was awash in tourists. A rain squall sent them scurrying for cover
and sent us to a mini-bus.
The rest of the short day was spent
doing tourist things, dashing from one to another like rabbits in a
lettuce field. First we went to Hell, a small spot known for its
sharp black rock formations and its famous post office/curio shop
where you can buy “I've been to Hell!” Tee shirts and postcards.
I took a picture. Next was a stop at the Tortuga Rum Cake shop. I
took a picture of a flag. Then came the Turtle Farm to share stares
with a variety of sea turtles being raised for food or release into
the wild. Okay, I took another picture, but then went to the Schooner
Bar for a jerk-chicken sandwich. Chickens were wandering underfoot
and picking up any spilled sandwich fillings. (i.e., eating chicken.
Ponder this: does chicken taste like chicken to a chicken?)
Then, having picked up a young Mexican
family anxious to return to the Disney ship Fantasea, we stopped at
the glass bottom boat Nautilus for a circle of the bay to see
shipwrecks and listen to the banter of the guide. Back to the pier
and a tender ride back tot he ship. At 1810 we pivoted to face the
open Gulf and headed out. At this point we have logged 679 nautical
miles; 417 noon to noon.
The evening was rolling with beam seas.
